Tiede tappoi zombit 2: Bakteerit / Science killed zombies 2: Bacteria

Normaalista kesästä nauttiessa / While enjoying a normal summer: Scooter - Dancing in the Moonlight

(ENG) Bacteria have been a pain in our flesh for ages and are the causative agent of some dangerous and - if they remain untreated - deadly diseases, such as tuberculosis, food poisonings and meningitis. Many bacterial infections spread easily and fast as a droplet infection - especially when people don't cover their mouths while coughing and sneezing. Bacteria can also exchange genetic material with cells of their own and other species that allows them to adapt quickly to changing environmental conditions. Bacteria could therefore easily cause an outbreak of zombism.
Or could they after all? Bacteria need time to grow in numbers to cause a massive infection. Surely a zombie bite could transmit large numbers of germs at once but a mere scratch would hardly make anyone ill in an instant. Bacterial growth in our bodies is actively prohibited by our immune system, which makes it possible for our bodies to avoid an infection completely even if we get the bastard in our system and we may become resistant against a specific bacterium.
Ever since the discovery and further development of antibiotics (starting with penicillin),  bacteria cannot easily cause a massive and uncontrollable outbreak. Along time and with excessive use of antibiotics bacteria do develop resistance to the toxic compounds but it takes more than a few bacterial generations. However, people being the way they are, resistance might be acquired faster than it should because of the excessive use of antibiotics these days and with many (stupid) people skipping the rest of the treatment after they start feeling better. I have enough trust in fellow human beings that in the face of either becoming a zombie or taking your medicine as the doctor told you would be enough motivation for most. After all, plague is blight no more in the age of modern medicine. Quoting Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's masterpiece Good Omens the nice and accurate prophecies of Agnes Nutter: Of the four horsemen of Apocalypse, Plague retired after the discovery of antibiotics.
